Groover Labs COVID-19 Testing

through WSU Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory

MDL FUNDING EXTENDED

THROUGH 6/30/24

Groover Labs is a testing partner for the Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory at WSU as a service to our members. You can get test kits from Tracy Hoover. Read and follow the instructions carefully for optimal results.

Notes about Testing

  • Everyone must register as a patient at mdl.wichita.edu prior to testing.

    • Make a note of your test code. You will need that for your test requisition to Tracy (see Testing Procedure below).

  • Testing is a self-administered saliva specimen. DO NOT eat, drink, smoke, brush teeth or chew gum at least 30 minutes prior to collection.

  • Tracy is authorized to observe testing and submit a test order.

  • You can be asymptomatic for testing and you can test as frequently as you like.

  • If you are symptomatic, please stay home and contact Tracy to make special arrangements or get a test elsewhere.

  • Samples are stable for 72 hours, but should be submitted before noon in order to get same day results.

    • You’ll need to transport your own sample to the MDL, or we can work out a rota if there is sufficient volume.

    • You’ll need to provide our Client Code (C452) and name (Groover Labs).

  • Results are reported in your patient portal within 24 hours, modulo weekends.

  • There is no charge for testing, either to you or Groover Labs. Costs are being covered by CARES funding to the MDL.

  • Follow the instructions carefully.

Testing Procedure

  • Tracy will get your verbal consent for the test and enter the required information for the test requisition.

    • Patient consent form here.

    • You should have already completed the patient registration process (link above).

    • Use this form to submit your test request to Tracy. All fields are required.

    • Text Tracy at 316-648-6157 to say you want to submit a sample.

    • Wait for Tracy’s response before driving your sample to the MDL. The MDL must receive a requisition before seeing the test sample.

      • If you want to drop off a sample first thing in the morning, it’s best to notify Tracy the night before.

  • Wash your hands before handling the specimen bag

  • Create saliva in your mouth by moving your tongue around or thinking of your favorite food. Do not sniff or cough. This is a *saliva* sample.

  • Bring the specimen tube to your lips and let the saliva naturally flow into the tube.

    • It will take 3-4 tries to get the required volume of saliva.

  • Wipe the outside of the specimen tube with a wipe if you get saliva on the outside. Avoid smearing the barcode.

  • Seal the tube, replace it in the biohazard bag, and seal.

  • Wash your hands.

  • Check the drop-off hours at the MDL; they have changed with the reduction in need for COVID testing.

  • Take the sample to the MDL at 4174 S. Oliver, Building 174H. If the MDL is doing public testing, you DO NOT need to wait in the long line. There are short term parking spots right in front of the building for specimen drop-off.

  • Wait patiently for results -- within 24 hours but usually sooner, depending on drop-off time.
